N95 Masks FAQ:
What is an N95 mask?
An N95 Mask (or Particulate Respirator) is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles. Note that the edges of the respirator are designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth. Surgical N95 Respirators are commonly used in healthcare settings and are a subset of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs), often referred to as N95s.
What does the ‘N’ mean and what does the ’95’ mean?
NIOSH (the American ‘National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’) is the institution that tests and approves particulate filtering facepiece respirators. There are 7 different ratings. ‘N’ means ‘Not resistant to oil’ while ’95’ means that the mask filters at least 95% of airborne particles.
What is the difference between N95 Masks and KN95 Masks?
Although they have a similar name, these masks have completely different standards. The “N”95 is the american Standard, while “KN”95 is the equivalent Chinese Standard. An N95 rating mask has been approved by NIOSH, but the KN95 rating masks are not. Both the N95 and the KN95 are made to filter at least 95% of particles down to 0.3 microns.
Are N95 Masks effective for COVID-19 (coronavirus)?
Yes, an N95 masks filters at least 95% of particles, including the virus particles. The virus attaches to water droplets or aerosols (i.e. really small droplets) that are generated by breathing, talking, coughing, etc. These consist of water, mucus protein and other biological material and are all larger than 1 micron. Breathing and talking generate particles around 1 micron in size, which will be collected by N95 respirator filters with very high efficiency
The CDC recommends that people age 2 and older should wear face masks in public settings and when around people who don’t live in their household.
How to wear an N95 mask?
When you wear your N95 mask, you must make sure that is is tight fitting and covers the entire nose and mouth, sitting snugly against your face. Make sure to read the fitting instructions before use.
